Hello,

Today marks another day when I don’t know what to write. But that’s how we roll, right? The blank canvas, the blank paper, the blinking cursor … It’s always good to befriend these scary monsters. And what better occasion to befriend scary monsters than Halloween?

See? the very mention of monsters reminds me of a story by the brilliant Brandy Metheny Bonifas. It’s called “There Are Monsters In These Mountains”. And to be completely honestly, there are very few stories that grip you from the very first line, whisking you over like a greased slide, bringing you all the way to the end, titillated and breathless.

I won’t spoil too much of the story for you. But it’s about the adventures of a girl who’s been a victim of her circumstances. One thing leads to another, and she discovers a world that she’s only heard about in rumors. And the rumors, as the title suggests, aren’t very pretty.

I’m barely keeping myself from telling the whole story here, it’s just too good. Brandy is just too good! As I keep saying I’m just incredibly fortunate to have attracted such brilliant writers, artists and creators in my life somehow.

It’s the first story in Athena. And everyone in the editorial team knew it had to be the first story. So I’d recommend you read it, if you haven’t already. And it’s worth reading again, if you’ve read it already. Go grab it in your shelf if you own it. Or grab it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08924FK3P

So what I learnt today (or got reminded of today, to be more accurate) is that there is wisdom in the age old advice of just sitting down and writing. Stream of consciousness is a beautiful stream. I didn’t know what to write to you when I started today. And yet here we are.

So have a great Halloween.

And just sit down and write. Or draw. Or do whatever your thing is. Just create something.

Live long and prosper.
