I was once talking to a friend and mentioned something I had read in a book.
He looked puzzled. And then he said, “How can you read so much? And how do you remember everything you’ve read?”
I was stumped for a second. I had never thought about it before.
So I just told him what I knew. That if you like reading, you find time to read somehow or the other. And you tend to remember things you find interesting.
Plus, if you read a lot, you’ll likely come across certain things over and over again. And they tend to stick even more in your mind. You make connections. And connections further cement what’s interesting or important.
Since that conversation many years ago, I’ve myself thinking about this a lot. Basically, I’ve just started observing my reading habits and tendencies a lot more.
And this is what I’ve found. When you’re really into reading (and other modern equivalents, like documentaries, podcasts, biopics, etc, but books trump them all in my opinion), it quickly becomes a rabbit hole for you.
You start with a white rabbit of your choice. It might be somebody you look up to. You start reading about them. Or reading what they’ve written.
And if it’s really someone you look up to, it’s very likely this person is a leader in whatever they do.
And here’s a good old cliche for you, my friend: Leaders are readers.
You quickly discover what they have been reading. And you wanna read it too. And that leads you to more stuff to read, watch, study, enjoy, expose yourself to, find more people, discover their role models, and then stalk those role models, and then discover more and more and more and more …
The glorious rabbit hole of success!!
I don’t even remember who my original white rabbit was. But I have a whole bunch of white rabbits I’m constantly following the rabbit world of success and glory.
And they come from everywhere and everywhen.
Artists, writers, philosophers, kings, statesmen, religious leaders, filmmakers, business leaders …
Leaders! Of all shapes and sizes.
And all this wealth and wisdom gathered and acquired from this rabbit hole has enabled me to achieve and fulfill my wildest dreams.
And there are many more on the horizon.
And one of them is to help as many people achieve more of their goals and dreams as possible.
This has increasingly become a recurrent theme in a lot of my work.
As the late great Zig Ziglar used to say, “You can have anything you want in life, as long as you help enough people get what they want in life.”
So that’s my self motive behind this seemingly altruistic vision.
And the best, most potent, most effective way I have found to have the greatest impact possible is through the neverending power of stories.
Had it not been for stories and storytelling, we might still be hiding in caves from the beasts of the jungle.
So that’s my lifelong obsession. The one common thread in everything I have always done and I’m currently doing, and will probably ever do.
Craft you stories well enough, put them in front of the right people, and watch your world transform in front of your eyes.
It really is the key to the kingdom.
Think about the stories you’re telling the world. And the stories you wanna tell. Are they having enough impact? Would you like to do better?
