You probably won't go seeking parenting advice from a UFC champion.
But why not?
It's easy to disregard professional fighters as boneheads when you look at the sport from afar. It's once been called “human cockfighting”, after all.
But you'd be surprised at how philosophicalany of these guys can be.
Anyway, so here's the thing. UFC world champion Islam Makhachev happens to be one of my favorite martial artists of all time. And here's a bit of parenting wisdom from the rugged mountain man:
"I'd like to give advice to parents to keep their children occupied with something. Because childhood is a period of life when child develops. And he should be constantly busy with training, studying, sports and other things.
Everything should be in due time. And the child should be doing something. Don't give him a lot of free time. IF YOU DON'T OCCUPY HIM WITH SOMETHING USEFUL, THEN THE PHONE OR STREET WILL OCCUPY HIM WITH SOMETHING HARMFUL. This is a very difficult time for younger generation. Parents should pay more attention to their children."
Now that doesn't sound much like a bonehead, does it?
That's what I like about these MMA fighters. They can kick your butt both intellectually and physically.
As a new parent, I'm thinking a lot about the kind of world we're creating for our children. Most importantly, are we preparing them for the real world out there?
I have every intention to homeschool my children, as I don't trust the formal educational systems. I would rather teach them to think for themselves and give them some life skills.
Reminds me of the “ROI of Reading” concept by Steven Kotler. The basic idea is that reading enables you to acquire several years of an author's life experience condensed into a few hours. Or minutes. Fascinating idea! I never gought of it like that.
On that note, how would you like to acquire the life experiences of 23 authors in one glorious volume? If that interests you, I'd recommend you go to https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09L9W8JKY/
and get yourself a copy of Discordia: Stories of a World in Chaos. It's a fascinating journey into a world of wonder, fantasy and mysticism. And Amazon is offering it at a ridiculous discount again. 🤦♂️ (I don't know what's with this Bezos guy!) Anyway, take advantage of the situation while you can.
Live long and prosper.
