Hi ,
I was just talking to a friend. He's a genius-level software developer, he's deep into philosophy (mostly nihilist, I would guess), and he runs a super interesting blog.
So we were talking about these emails I send to the Dastaan World Tribe. He wanted to know what makes me write these emails, what my motivation is, and all that.
I felt totally honored, flattered and all the related emotions when he told me he literally waits for my emails. I picked my jaw up from the floor and asked him why. Weird question, I know. But I just did.
“I don't know but it makes me feel a hell lot better,” he said. I was almost in tears. And naturally, it makes me wanna write even more. Cuz, let's face it, this is the real reward of what we do. Money is nice and everything. Well, money is VERY nice and everything, to be fair.
But this is what we are after, after all. A feeling of having said something. A feeling of having made a difference. A feeling of having made someone feel better.
Don't you think?
And even money. We need it primarily for the feeling of security and freedom it brings. It won't buy happiness. But as a wise man once said, “Money will solve all the problems that not having money creates.”
And yet, the conversation with my friend eventually led to a point where he said, “Writers die broke. That's why I have a profession.”
Ouch. Yikes. And all the other such expressions.
I disagree, needless to say. But I remember I once said the same thing about art when somebody asked me why I chose to go to business school instead of an art school.
“Artists die broke,” I told that person.
“You're out of your mind,” that guy said. Turns out, he was the grandson of a famous artist, and knew what he was talking about.
Today, I certainly don't believe writers and artists are doomed to die poor. Far from it. It's just about knowing the business side of your art and writing business. Which most of us don't, unfortunately.
But we gotta embrace it. Cuz there's no universal law that necessitates suffering and making your loved ones suffer in order to make art.
Anyway, let me know what's your take on this entire thing. And also let me know if there's something you want me to talk about in these emails.
I read every email. And I try and respond to every email too.
Much love,
Shakaib.
